Santiago García Galván studied film and visual arts at the University of Arts and Entertainment of Madrid TAI and holds a Master’s in Business in the Entertainment Industry. He is currently one of the most prominent producers in Mexico.
He has more than 60 titles as producer and executive producer. Between 2006 and 2010 he produced four films: “La misma luna,” which premiered at Sundance 2007, “Tequila: A Story of Passion,” “Preludio,” and “Havanyork,” the latter two winners at several film festivals.
In 2010, Santiago, together with prolific businessman Alex García, co-founded Itaca Films in Mexico, one of the leading production companies in Latin America. Between 2010 and 2015, Itaca Films, in addition to opening offices in Brazil, Colombia, and the United States, produced more than 50 films in those four countries, including “El cártel de los sapos” and three films by director Alfonso Pineda Ulloa: “Cercenado,” “Espectro,” and “El Jesuita,” the latter written by Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver and Raging Bull).
He also produced “Besos de azúcar” by Carlos Cuarón, “La sangre de Dios” by Guillermo Arriaga, and the first three films by Manolo Caro. In co-production with Los Güeros Films, he made “El cumpleaños de la abuela” and “Lo que podríamos ser.” In addition, “Captive,” a film by Jerry Jameson starring Kate Mara and David Oyelowo, was acquired worldwide by Paramount Pictures. Other projects include “Flying Low” by Beto Gómez and “Medeas,” directed by Andrea Pallaoro, awarded at the 2014 Venice Film Festival and at 12 other festivals.
Among the most significant titles are “Nido de cuervos” by Arturo Menéndez, the first feature film produced in El Salvador since 1969, and the first Mexico–Cuba co-production of the last decade: “Fátima y el parque de la fraternidad.”
He produced the directorial debut of Oscar-nominated Demián Bichir: “Una historia de circo & a Love Song.” “Bound to Vengeance,” the second feature film by José Manuel Cravioto, had its international premiere at Sundance 2015. He also produced “Pure Happiness,” filmed in Louisiana.
Other highlights include the second feature by Marcelino Islas, “Charity”; the directorial debut of Reed Morano, “Meadowland,” starring Olivia Wilde and Luke Wilson; and “Semana Santa,” which premiered in Toronto in 2015.
He worked as executive producer on the second feature film by Jonás Cuarón, “Desierto,” winner of the FIPRESCI Prize at the Toronto International Film Festival 2015. This film was distributed in the United States by STX.
As a television producer, he produced the first season (12 episodes) of the fiction series “Dios Inc” for HBO Latin America, as well as the first season (9 episodes) of “Crónica de Castas TV.” He also actively collaborated with Netflix’s “Chef’s Table” in Latin America on several seasons, including producing the episode for Enrique Olvera.
He has worked on international productions such as “Fast and Furious 8” and “Transformers 5” in Havana, Cuba. He contributed to a historic cultural collaboration between the United States and Cuba and received an award at the Gibara Film Festival for his cultural contribution to Cuban cinema.
