Film Production

Jim Steele currently leads Filmray, Inc, a film production and financing company that specializes in guiding investors, filmmakers, and technology companies through all aspects of production, financing, and distribution in the rapidly changing film business.

A veteran of the film industry, Steele oversaw the construction of the first digital cinema network in the United States in 2003 and has been involved in one way or another in the production, distribution, financing, and sales of more than 200 films.

Recent Filmray projects include: “God Is A Bullet,” directed by Nick Cassavetes and starring Jamie Foxx and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau; “Blackout,” directed by Sam Macaroni and starring Josh Duhamel, Nick Nolte, and Abbie Cornish; “Running With The Devil,” starring Laurence Fishburne and Nick Cage; “Cutthroat City,” directed by RZA and starring Ethan Hawke, Wesley Snipes, and Terence Howard; “Nostalgia,” starring Jon Hamm and Bruce Dern; and “Blackway,” starring Anthony Hopkins.

Steele began his career in 1988 in business development at Hemdale Films, where he was involved in films such as: “The Last Emperor,” “Platoon,” “Terminator,” and many others.

In 1990, Steele left Hemdale Films to run Paul Bartel’s production company, North Street Films. At North Street, Steele was involved in films such as “Scenes From A Class Struggle in Beverly Hills” and “The Life And Death of Andy Warhol” with Gus Van Sant.

In 1991, Steele co-produced the Russian thriller “Made In The USSR,” starring Frank Whaley and Roman Polanski. In 1992, Steele became Vice President of Production at Working Title Films. At Working Title, Steele was involved in the production of films such as: “Romeo Is Bleeding,” “Bob Roberts,” and “Map Of The Human Heart.”

In 1993, Steele produced the noir western “Posse” for Working Title, directed by Mario Van Peebles. In 1994, Steele also co-produced “Love & A 45” with Renée Zellweger.

In 1995, Steele joined Live Entertainment as Senior Vice President of Production and Acquisitions. While at LIVE, Steele was involved in films such as: “Bad Lieutenant,” “Killing Zoe,” “Reservoir Dogs,” “Little Odessa,” “Trees Lounge,” and many others. In 1996, Jim Steele produced “The Substitute” with Tom Berenger and the science fiction film “The Arrival” with Charlie Sheen. In 1997, Steele served as Executive Producer of “Café Society” with Frank Whaley and Lara Flynn Boyle.
